Obituary of Lauris R. Mayne
Please share a memory of Lauris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lauris Rowena Mayne “Barney” went to her heavenly home on September 26, 2022, while holding her daughters hands.
Born on July 14, 1934 in Main Ridge, Clarendon, Jamaica, Lauris worked as a District Midwife in Brandon Hill, Jamaica. During this period she gave birth to her first daughter Laurice Lovemore. Her Second-Mom, Aunt “Darling”, encouraged her to follow in her footsteps to become a nurse. Lauris left Jamaica in 1963 for Nursing School in England and met Claudius Mayne during this time. Upon completing her program, she decided to come to Canada to work and live. She married Claude shortly after arriving in Canada. Her second daughter Claudette Mayne was born a few years later.
Lauris cherished her career as a nurse and worked until she was 80 years old. Most notably she served as a private duty nurse for more than a decade for Martha Eaton, the niece of the department store’s founder. Lauris loved laughing, enjoyed 1950s and 1960s music, CNN, fancy things, and was a foodie. Lauris was a Christian who loved the Lord, knew scripture and was proud of her Jamaican heritage.
She was a loving mother to Claudette & Laurice and will be missed by Margueritte and Colin, Claudius, Cynthia, Frederick, her grandchildren, Jahmira, Joshua and Mekonen, friends Donna, Lydia & Louisa, nieces & nephews, family members: Claudine Douglas & The Taylor, Gregory, Cameron, Bartley & Lewin families, neighbours and to all that knew and loved her.
The family is grateful to caregivers: Amy, Anabelle, Ella, Ermie, Henry, Presy, Vangie and PSWs from Spectrum and Integracare agencies. We are very thankful for the doctors and nurses from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care aiding Lauris and to our friends and family for your love and support. Lauris will be deeply missed. Her spirit will live on in those she touched.
